Ella Bermowitz *

Ella Bermowitz (Ella Gruber) was born in 1913 in Kolozsvar, Hungary, now Cluj in Romania. She immigrated to the United States as a young child.

While still a teenager she went to work in the millinery industry in New York City as a trimmer of hats. She was talented as a hat maker and was chosen by other workers as their union representative. She was also an accomplished seamstress and opened tailor shops with her sister, Ilus Lobl, in the Bronx, New York and in Hightstown, New Jersey.

Roosevelt artists, Gregorio Prestopino and Aurelia Battaglia painted a mural for their shop in Hightstown.

Her textile art developed from her sewing skills.
